  • Planning:  We prepare and review personal goals and identify objectives for our next meeting.
  • Program:  We host library sponsored programs and presentations that pertain to the writing life.

Our Vision and Goals

Our Vision:  We are dedicated to encouraging each other to initiate, develop and execute our writing lives.

Our Goals:  We will help each other develop personal accountability in our writing and will measure our progress as a writing group to ensure growth.

Our Story

In 2006, the KARMA Foundation funded a memoir writing seminar at the Logan Township Library Branch of GCLS.  Ms. Narcissa Weatherby taught the 6 week workshop attracting numerous writers from the community.

The Logan Library Writers Group held its first meeting on June 21, 2006.  The original members were participants from the memoir writing seminar who were interested in growing their writing skills and sharing their work.

The group continues to grow and flourish with many of the original members and new members joining all the time.

Come write with us today!

New at the Library

Two new books of interest to writers arrived at the library today:

Manuscript Makeover:  Revision Techniques No Fiction Writer Can Afford to Ignore                  by Elizabeth Lyon

Professional editor and author Elizabeth Lyon offers aspiring novelists the guidance and instruction they need to write and edit well-crafted and compelling stories that will stand out from the competition and attract the attention of agents and publishers, including:

  • Stand-out style techniques, from accessing an authentic voice to applying techniques of "wordsmithing" that transform prose
  • How to rewrite characterization for dimensionality, a universal need, and theme
  • Adjustment suggestions to match the prose style and structure of specific genres
  • Correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style
  • Strategies to strengthen story beginnings and endings
  • Methods for increasing plot stakes, creating movement, and adjusting pace for maximum suspense

The Power of Point of View:  Make Your Story Come to Life                                                                 by Alicia Rasley

The difference between a pedestrian telling of a story and a powerful telling is in how the point of view is handled. A well-written story is one in which the author allows POV to guide not just how the plot develops, but how the story—the merging of plot and character—develops. In The Power of Point of View, readers will learn POV basics and then how to use POV to influence a story from the ground up.   The Power of Point of View features genre-specific POV tips, techniques for crafting POV to individual stories and writing styles, engaging exercises, and more.

These and other books on the craft of writing can be placed on hold while online at www.gcls.org

April 9, 2008 Meeting Notes

Logan Library Writer's Group - April 9, 2008 Meeting Notes

ATENDEES:  Bill Merritt, Muhammad Maruf, Anne Wodnick, Leah Webb

BUSINESS:  Met with Anne Wodnick concerning the new blog.  We recieved a handout with directions for posting and commenting.  This form was to be e-mailed to all in the group.

It was discussed that the group might think about a set limit of people who will show for a meeting.  If less than 4 will be there, we might think about cancelling that night.  But also keep in touch with Catherine before a decision is made in case there is important information that is needed to be shared from Anne, etc.  Also, with summer coming up, it might be nice to keep track when people's vacations, etc. are going to be so we know how to plan for education and writing samples.

WRITING SAMPLES/FEEDBACK:  Bill gave Leah feedback on Joseph script.  He also shared a poem he wrote for his brother's fiance when she passed away.  What a beautiful way to honor her. He will be passing out copies to the rest of the group next week.  He is going to bring info on a poem that his brother wrote about his fiance and her sister that was published.  He is also planning on bringing a work called "Cape May" and then another writing that is of a lighter tone.

Muhammad is working on a  25 page paper on dreams (in another group).  He has put some of the info he has on dreams on Facebook.  When you go to Facebook, type "society for anthropology of consciousness" and you should be able to find his writing there.

FUTURE EDUCATION, WRITING SUBMISSIONS:   April 23

  • Education:  Andrea
  • Writing Submissions: Bill and feedback on Andrea's story

New at the library this week:

Dialogue:  Techniques and Exercises for Crafting Effective Dialogue by Gloria Kempton

How do some writers craft conversation so authentic, it feels like they've been eavesdropping? What's the secret behind getting characters to talk to each other? How can writers make their dialogue sing?

Answers to all of these questions and more can be found in Gloria Kempton's in-depth look at this crucial component of fiction. Readers will learn how to create dialogue that sizzles, with tips on:
* Creating dialogue for specific genres
* Bringing characters to life with revealing dialogue
* Identifying and fixing common dialogue problems

Each chapter features numerous examples of successful dialogue drawn from bestselling novels, and chapter-ending exercises help readers apply the lessons learned.  This is one of four in the Write Great Fiction series by Writer’s Digest Books.
